Youth violent crime with guns on the rise, Charlotte police say

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – Problems with violent gun crime in the city of Charlotte were discussed at a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police briefing on Wednesday.

Nearly 500 firearms (496) have been seized by CMPD officers this year, a 14% increase from this time in 2021. This comes as gunshot cases overall are in increase (up 10%) in 2022 compared to the previous year.

The University City division led all CMPD divisions in firearm seizures with 77 this year, a 67% increase from this time in 2021 and a 129% increase from the average over 5 years, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.

The following are examples of recent investigations that led to the seizure of firearms:

  • On February 27, officers responded to a shooting at occupied accommodation in the 2300 block of Prestigious Lane. A mother told police that a bullet nearly hit her son. Officers determined the bullet was fired from a nearby apartment. Officers obtained a search warrant and found four firearms, ammunition and a large number of narcotics.
  • On February 15, officers responded to a call for domestic violence service in the 8000 block of Dave McKinney Avenue. A suspect had pointed a gun at others in the residence. Officers successfully defused a barricade situation with the suspect and took him into custody. Two firearms were seized, one of which was stolen, as well as a quantity of heroin from trafficking.

The CMPD said it responded to several online threats involving young people with guns. The Education Outreach and Youth Services Division works closely with School Resource Officers and Patrol Officers to thoroughly investigate these threats.they said.

The following are examples of recent investigations that led to the seizure of firearms:

  • On February 27, CMPD officers were alerted to threats against Myers Park High School. Officers responded to the suspect’s address in the 1500 block of Mockingbird Lane. They contacted the suspect’s mother and informed her of the threats. The mother authorized the officers to search the suspect’s room. Officers found a handgun and a narcotics binder. A minor was arrested and the suspect was charged with communicating threats, as well as weapons and drugs violation.
    • On February 1, a school resource officer at Albemarle Middle School was notified of students posing with guns on Instagram. The officer discovered that several of the guns were BB guns, but this one was real. The officer found the individual with the real weapon who is a minor at another school. The officer responded to the suspect’s resident and obtained clearance to search for a weapon. With the help of the family, he found the handgun.

    The most recent incident in the Charlotte area was a fatal shooting where an innocent bystander was hit and killed by a stray bullet during a shootout between two parties near Steele Creek, the CMPD said.
