Postdoctoral Fellow in the Topic, R744 System for Electric Vehicles job with NORWEGIAN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY – NTNU

About the position

The postdoctoral fellow position is a temporary position whose main objective is to qualify for work in senior academic positions.

A Postdoctoral position is available within the Cold research group on the theme “R744 system for electric vehicles”. The appointment has a duration of 2 years.

The refrigeration research group has a well-established expertise and network regarding vapor compression systems applying natural working fluids for various applications in different industrial sectors. In close collaboration with SINTEF, the group is involved in several national and international research projects.

The background of the research work is an R&D cooperation of NTNU with an international private company, interested in developing and building thermal systems for electric cars based on the application of the natural working fluid carbon dioxide (CO2), R744. As part of this cooperation, NTNU’s refrigeration team supports business and the automotive sector in the transition to more environmentally friendly and energy efficient technologies to achieve the objectives of the Kigali Amendment of the Protocol of Montreal, without any compromise regarding the hidden environmental impacts of unnatural working fluids.

During the postdoc period, theoretical and experimental studies on the components (compressors, ejectors, heat exchangers, etc.) and the alternative configurations of the system will be carried out in close collaboration with the company. Some NTNU laboratory infrastructure will be dedicated to this work. The R744 reversible system that will be developed and tested will validate the first simulation tools. These dynamic simulation tools will also be applied to identify intelligent control strategies to be implemented and optimized in the first demonstration versions.

You will report to Professor Armin Hafner.

Job duties

Tasks and research work during the period as a postdoctoral fellow consist of conducting theoretical studies of system design and control as well as experimental campaigns in a laboratory or demo car environment. Organize and actively participate in internal workshops and prepare scientific publications based on the results obtained in close collaboration with the partner company and the NTNU management team.
