No topic too big for these public speakers

Public speakers at Reddford House Northcliff take center stage.

The school’s grade 8-12 public speaking teams recently participated in the High School Public Speaking Festival during the first term. It was the first in-person public speaking event after Covid-19 and the excitement was reportedly palpable.

For their matrics, it was a bittersweet time as this would be the team’s last appearance at the festival. Junior teams had to select a quote from a recognized sports hero or significant person under the age of 30.

As the 8th graders chose the words of Greta Thunberg: “You must act. You must do the impossible. Because giving up is never an option. Through extensive research and eloquent speeches, each was heard touching on the notions of the impossible made possible, miracles and goals.

Grade 9 students chose the words of football coach Mike Singletary: “Do you know what my favorite part of the game is? The opportunity to play. What they looked at the notion of opportunities and how they are all around us.

Seniors talked about the theme of “normalcy,” which was a very broad topic, but the teams would have used their innovative thinking to present insight beyond its literal interpretation.

Although there was stiff competition, the teams did their school proud.
