Madness is the subject of Friday’s story slam

PORT ANGELES — “Fools” is the theme for the upcoming Out Loud Story Slam, a gathering of storytellers and true story listeners this Friday.

The location for this latest installment in the story-slam series is Studio Bob, the large upstairs gallery space at 118½ E. Front St., where admission will be $10 with cash and credit cards accepted . Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for the 7 p.m. show and refreshments will be available for purchase.

A story slam, said organizers Jeanné Sparks and Nessa Goldman, is a friendly competition between storytellers who present short, true sagas from their own lives. Listeners are also strongly encouraged, they said, and there is no pressure to be a cashier.

As for Friday night’s “fools” theme, “maybe there was a time when you did something stupid, put your foot in your mouth, or misjudged your audience. Or maybe be you the one who witnessed all of this, or pulled the wool over someone’s eyes. As always, our themes are open to your interpretation,” Goldman and Sparks write in their invitation.

“Be creative, be silly, don’t be afraid to be silly and get on stage,” they said, adding that stories could be up to five minutes long.

Early Friday evening, future storytellers will be able to put their name in the bag. Next comes a series of drawings for people who can step in and tell their stories.

Those considering participating as storytellers are encouraged to contact the organizers of Out Loud Story Slam at [email protected]

“Knowing who/how many intend to speak at events is extremely useful,” Goldman and Sparks said.

“If you’ve thought about talking about it but want a little more advice, please don’t hesitate to contact us.”
