Howie Roseman is the subject of a three-way sportswriter from Philadelphia Kerfuffle

I missed it Wednesday afternoon but I was alerted by readers. “It” is a Twitter kerfuffle involving Phillies/catch-all writer Kevin Cooney and Eagles writers John McMullen and Mike Kaye.

It is the duty of wide traverse to account for all the kerfuffles and gaiters, and this one is quite long. It was a start and stop affair spanning several hours. It was an epic saga, not exactly War and peacebut longer than One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish.

The topic is Howie Roseman and whether or not he is one of the top five GMs in the National Football League. There’s a lot to share here, so I’ll just give you all the tweets I can post and you can catch up:

(at this point there are back and forths arguing to prove their respective points, then it resumes)

It’s not a very controversial debate, maybe like a 3.7 out of 10 on the arbitrary scale. It’s not like a radio host punching his producer, which would be a 10 out of 10, but there are some personal blows in this threesome.

Obviously, Cooney started with the response to JAKIB Media’s chart. John and Mike are reactionary, then the thing escalates. Kevin ESCALATES the conversation when he pulls out the ultimate insult, which is the line on Spadaro. The gloves come off when you’re compared to a non-objective team pay guy. If Cooney accused me of “auditioning” for the Spuds job, I would have taken him into a headache within five seconds and then given him a noogie.*

I’m honestly less interested in the spat and more interested in the subject matter. Is Howie Roseman one of the top five GMs? Depends. There are so many facets to the job. For one thing, Howie couldn’t get out of a wet paper bag. There are far too many big duds over the years. But drafting isn’t a science, and a lot of great GMs swing and miss. I think the overriding factor is Howie keeps the Eagles mostly competitive year after year. After being exiled to storage closet B during the Chip years, he reemerged to build a Super Bowl winner two years later. Then, when the Birds were supposedly “dysfunctional” after Doug left, he put together a playoff team with a first-year head coach while eating the biggest kill in NFL history. Now they enter the 2022 draft with multiple first-round draft picks.

I think Howie has too much crap for the Jalen Reagor and Andre Dillard stuff, which is to say his draft performance is weighed disproportionately against the other duties of the position. I know fans are frustrated with Howie, especially since the Eagles have gone flat in an effort to earn a second ring, but you look around the league and you could do a lot worse. You always have to put things into perspective. I will also say that I don’t think congratulating a GM is done with a macro-level strategy to curry favor. GMs don’t run away to local beats anyway, or at least not as much as this world’s Schefters do, so when you suggest people try to butter up the GM or whatever, they get offended.

Good spit, though. A fiery kerfuffle.

*Do Zoomers even know what a noogie is? It’s when you rub your fingers on someone’s head. Man I feel old.
