Broadband topic only for Fairfield special council meeting

FAIRFIELD – The City Council will discuss initiatives identified to increase the broadband network in the city on Tuesday.

Consulting firm Magellan Advisors, in 2019 and 2020, created the broadband development plan for Fairfield. It emphasizes “internal municipal needs and potential private partners. . . an in-depth review of business models and broadband technologies, an employee inventory of municipal and local network assets, and a vision for a network that integrates these assets to address the city’s connectivity challenges,” staff said at the advice.

Community input was then added to the plan, along with a “gap analysis to determine areas of the city that are unserved or underserved; conceptual adjustments to network design to meet the needs of a more diverse range of stakeholders; cost reduction and revenue generation opportunities; and financial analysis of various business scenarios to ensure the city has a full understanding of the business and financial suitability of the various options,” the staff report states.

Council has scheduled the special meeting for 5 p.m. in the Council Chambers of City Hall, 1000 Webster St.
